Hope you are doing good. This post comes almost a year after my previous one.
I was a bit busy learning new technologies, meeting people and traveling ?. Infact, it has been a great year for me so far. During the past few months, I was asked by few people about how to install a WordPress blog and start making a website. Is it easy launch a website without having much technical skills?
Yes! Thats my answer and in this post, I’m gonna tell you the entire process of getting it done yourself.
Before we get into the nitty gritty, take a look at 5 fascinating facts about WordPress CMS in 2010.
- According to W3Techs, WordPress powers 37% of all the websites on the Internet, including those without a content management system (CMS) or with a custom-coded CMS.

- At the start of 2010, WordPress powered more than 12% of all websites.
- According to Google Trends, WordPress is a dominant player among all hosted website builders and is growing at a faster rate. You can also see these growth trends play themselves out in Google Trends, where Joomla and Drupal (and to a lesser extent, WordPress) have declined or remained flat, while Squarespace and Wix are generating increasing interest.
There are 2 ways of going about doing this but again it depends on what the function of the website is going to be and how much you have to spend.
First there’s the free way to create a blog using WordPress. It’s really simple… just go to WordPress.com Create an account there, choose your free blog theme, start posting and you’re done. I have created one such blog at https://raahulbasu.wordpress.com/ but didn’t feel like continuing with it coz I wanted to go ahead with a professional approach and have my own domain i.e., Rahul Basu
There’s a better and more professional approach which is to host WordPress yourself within your own hosting account. If you want to create a website using WordPress and you have little money to spend – the best approach is to use a small budget hosting company like BlueHost.com, HostGator.com, GoDaddy.com or Netfirms.com . I tried the services of GoDaddy (for domain registrations) & Netfirms (for small website hostings) several times and found them satisfactory especially for my small budget website needs. Apart from the hosting, you will also require a domain name i.e., rahulbasu.in (There are domain names with various kinds of extension names like .com, .org, .net etc..)
I’m now going to assume that you have taken a low budget hosting along with the domain name. Most of these hosting control panel that you get from the hosting service provider has a provision to install WordPress with the press of a few buttons. Thus saving you from the hassle of downloading the WordPress files from WordPress.org and uploading it back to the hosting server and configuring your MYSQL Account by creating a database name, username, password. That was one of a kind technical stuff which I’m sure you don’t have to worry anymore. ?
All you need now is a decent WordPress theme and there are plenty to choose from. But again, it really depends on what you want to achieve because you always get what you pay for. You can pick up a free template theme here direct from WordPress.org or you can buy one from ThemeForest website which is actually one of my favorite.
